The File Session command in the Network menu is required before use of the Send File, Edit File, and Receive File commands on a computer reached by TCP/IP. A computer reached by modem does not support File Sessions; Terminal Sessions must be used for modem file transfer.
A File Session uses the TCP/IP standard protocol called FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to accomplish file transfers.
The strange text that will appear on your screen when you give a command like Send File or List Files on a File Session is actually FTP commands (from you) and FTP replies (from the other computer). The replies, which begin with a three-digit number, may give you helpful information when errors arise.
The commands usable on a File Session are listed when the session starts up. In brief, they are Send, Receive, and Edit File in the Network menu, and most of the commands in the Commands menu. The only items in the Commands menu which are not supported are Copy File and Password.
When you are done with a File Session, use the Goodbye command in the Commands menu to disconnect from the other computer. Just closing the window could leave an FTP process running on the other computer, which is anti-social.
